Engineering leads, product teams, and FinOps practitioners evaluating Amazon Q across business, developer productivity, BI, and contact center use cases.
Why We Built This Tool
Amazon Q spans four distinct products with different pricing models — per-seat monthly for Q Business and Developer, per-seat for QuickSight, and per chat message or voice minute for Connect — making cross-product comparison essential before rollout.
What Problem It Solves
- Product confusion. Q Business, Q Developer, Q for QuickSight, and Q in Connect target different personas and have entirely different pricing models.
- Lite vs Pro decision. Q Business Lite ($3/user) vs Pro ($20/user) — the 6.7× price difference is only justified when identity federation, plugins, or creator mode are required.
- Connect usage volume. At $0.0015/chat message and $0.008/voice minute, Q in Connect scales with contact volume — high-traffic contact centers can see meaningful monthly costs at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Q Business Lite and Pro?
Q Business Lite ($3/user/month) includes web experience chat, document Q&A, and search across connected data sources. Q Business Pro ($20/user/month) adds plugins (calling external APIs), code interpreter, identity federation for IAM Identity Center, and creator mode for building custom AI apps. Choose Pro when you need programmatic integrations or enterprise SSO.
What does Q Developer Individual (free) include versus Pro?
Q Developer Individual (free, requires AWS Builder ID) provides code completion in IDEs and inline chat. Q Developer Pro ($19/user/month) adds security scanning, repository-level code understanding, CLI agent capabilities, and Q Developer customization for your own codebase. Teams with security workflows or large codebases benefit most from Pro.
How does Q in Connect bill?
Q in Amazon Connect charges $0.0015 per chat message and $0.008 per voice minute, the same rates for agent assist and for end-customer self-service. A contact center with 100,000 voice minutes per month would pay $800/month regardless of the number of agents, so cost tracks contact volume, not headcount.
Does Q for QuickSight require a QuickSight subscription?
Generative BI comes with the Pro QuickSight user tiers: Reader Pro is $20/user/month (versus $3 for Reader) and Author Pro is $50/user/month (versus $24 for Author). This calculator models Reader Pro seats; Q Business Pro also includes Reader Pro access.
Can I use both Q Business and Q Developer for the same team?
Yes. Q Business and Q Developer are independent products and can be deployed to the same team simultaneously. Q Business addresses knowledge management and company data Q&A; Q Developer addresses coding productivity. Licensing is separate and per-user for each product.
How does Amazon Q relate to Amazon Kendra?
Amazon Kendra is a search API for custom search experiences embedded in your applications. Amazon Q Business is a user-facing AI assistant with chat, Q&A, and plugin capabilities. Q Business can use Kendra as a retrieval backend, but they serve different use cases. For developer-integrated search with custom ranking, Kendra is the right tool; for end-user AI assistants, Q Business is the right tool.
